Dr. Andrew Loar, DVM, DACVIM (IM and Oncology) – Co-CMO, Co-Founder and ZNHub Lab Director

Andy was raised in a traveling military (USAF) family and moved nearly a dozen times before finishing high school in Atlanta Georgia. He attended McGill University, in Montreal, for his undergraduate studies and graduated from the University of Georgia with his DVM (1979). He completed an internship at Louisiana State University and his residency in oncology at the Animal Medical Center in New York City.

He has served on the clinical staffs at the veterinary schools of Virginia Tech and the University of Wisconsin, as well as the West Los Angeles Veterinary Medical Center. He received dual board certification with the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ACVIM: Internal Medicine {’84} and Oncology {‘94}). He was the first veterinary oncologist to practice in southern California and operated oncology referral clinics in Los Angeles, Orange and San Diego counties from 1985-1995. Dr Loar completed additional training in clinical pathology at Oklahoma State University.

In 2000, after returning to the Animal Medical Center (NY) as staff clinical cytologist, he subsequently co-founded ALX Laboratory, a small, ambitious commercial reference pathology laboratory in Manhattan, which was purchased by IDEXX in 2011. From 2012 until 2017 he was the clinical laboratory director and consulting cytologist at STAT Veterinary Lab, a facility originally created as the in-clinic reference laboratory of the Veterinary Specialty Hospital in San Diego. Veterinary Specialty Hospital merged with other specialty hospitals in 2015 to become Ethos Veterinary Health, with more than 17 clinics in 6 states and Hong Kong; Dr Loar became VP of Laboratories for Ethos Veterinary Health. In 2016 he implemented a second core veterinary reference laboratory for Ethos in the Boston area.

During his more than 30 years in various veterinary diagnostic spaces he has served as a cytologist and oncology/internal medicine consultant at Veterinary Reference Laboratories, Professional Animal Laboratory (now ANTECH), IDEXX Laboratories, Ethos Diagnostics and Animal Reference Pathology (ARP).  Andy recently moved to Louisville, KY to oversee all clinical operations of the ZNHub.  He is otherwise a frequent world traveler, has many fine leather-bound books and knows people you know.

Dr. David Gardiner, DVM, MS, DACVP – Co-CMO, Chief Pathology Officer and Co-Founder

Dr. Gardiner, AKA DG1, received his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) degree from Cornell University and completed his veterinary anatomic pathology residency and Masters of Science (MS) degree at Colorado State University and is board certified in veterinary anatomic pathology by the American College of Veterinary Pathologists. After pathology residency training, Dr Gardiner dove head first into surgical pathology at IDEXX Laboratories West Sacramento lab and eventually became the regional head of anatomic pathology for Canada and the western United States for IDEXX.  Wanting to try and do things a different way in the veterinary diagnostic lab industry, with Mr Smith (ZNLabs CFO), Dr. Gardiner and Mr. Smith purchased the Animal Reference Pathology (www.animalreferencepathology.com)  division of ARUP Laboratories.

The idea for ZNLabs developed out of running Animal Reference Pathology, interactions with Dr Loar (ZNLabs Co-CMO), Mr Gersholowitz (ZNLabs CEO) and a desire to offer veterinarians a viable 3rd option in the veterinary reference laboratory space. No one was doing anything about it and despite prior unsuccessful attempts (AVRL), we decided to make it happen.

A member of the American Veterinary Medical Association, the American College of Veterinary Pathologists and the International Society of Veterinary Dermatopathology, Dr Gardiner is particularly interested in pathology laboratory management, ocular pathology, dermatopathology, and oncologic pathology. Dr. Gardiner is an adjunct professor in the School of Veterinary Medicine at Utah State University where Animal Reference Pathology sponsors an annual veterinary spelling bee. Close your eyes and can you spell intussusception?

She enjoys doing anything outdoors, spending time with her family and dogs, and just relaxing when she has time.

Dave Gersholowitz, MBA – CEO and Co-Founder

Dave, AKA DG2, is originally from Cape Town, South Africa, but has never been on a safari or in a single gold mine.  Rather, after a few attempts, his family moved to the US to pursue the American Dream.  Cue “Out Of Africa” Theme…

DG2 entered the veterinary field in 2005 when he joined BluePearl Veterinary Partners to launch a large practice in NYC.  Working with an amazing team of doctors and staff, DG2 grew the NY Region into one of the largest Specialty and Emergency practices in the country.  In 2011, DG2 transitioned into the COO role for BluePearl and was instrumental in BluePearl’s growth to over 60 locations in 20 states. Then Mars came knocking…

In early 2017, Dave joined Andy Loar, Dave Gardiner and Everett Smith to pursue the next great thing, which is of course veterinary diagnostics. The four musketeers came together to create ZNLabs Veterinary Diagnostics with a simple goal – revolutionize the veterinary laboratory field.  We’re working on it! 😊

DG2 is married and lives with his wife and two not-so-tiny kids in sunny Tampa, Florida. They share their place with their three dogs, Ollie, Fiona, and Kenny.  DG2 earned a BS in Electrical Engineering from USF and an MBA from UCLA Anderson School of Management.

Dr. Suzanne Whitaker, DVM, MS – Director of Veterinary Relationships

Dr. Suzanne Whitaker graduated with an undergraduate Biology degree.  For graduate school she attended The Ohio-State University where first she first completed a Masters Degree in Animal Science followed by a Doctorate in Veterinary Medicine.  After veterinary school she moved to Missouri to complete a one year small animal general practice internship at The University of Missouri.  After her internship was complete she stayed on staff as part of the general practice faculty. A few years later a move to Florida allowed her to practice general medicine in private practice for 13 years prior to joining the ZNLabs family.

In her free time, Dr. Whitaker spends time with her family and menagerie of pets.  She also enjoys spending time outdoors, running, and hiking.

Dr. Amy Miller, DVM, MS, DACVP – Director of Cytology & Clinical Pathology, Dallas

Dr. Amy Miller grew up in Mandeville, Louisiana and received a BA in mass communications from LSU.  After working for a short time in local radio and management, Dr. Miller decided to pursue her lifetime passion for veterinary medicine. She graduated from the Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine in 2004.  After veterinary school, she worked as a small and exotic animal veterinarian for 2 years in Fort Collins and Boulder Colorado.  During her time in general veterinary practice, she developed an interest in clinical pathology, especially diagnostic cytology.  She was accepted into a combined Clinical Pathology and master’s degree program at CSU in 2006 and completed the program in 2009.  Dr. Miller founded CytoVet in 2011 after recognizing a need for more comprehensive and personalized cytology services within the local veterinary community. CytoVet expanded to serve numerous veterinary hospitals in the Dallas Fort Worth metroplex as well as many other hospitals throughout the country.  Amy is thrilled to partner with ZNLabs to take the next step and launch a new, full service veterinary laboratory in Dallas, Texas!

While Dr. Miller enjoys all aspects of clinical pathology, diagnostic cytopathology is her area of specialty.  She also has an interest in hematology and diagnostic immunology. She has published several articles and case reports in the field of clinical pathology.  When she is not spending time with her family, you can find her running, cooking or curled up with a good book.

Megan Gonterman – Laboratory Support, Louisville

Megan earned her Associates Degree in Veterinary Technology in 2015. She has two years of experience in the veterinary laboratory field, with prior experience working as a Veterinary Assistant for a local animal hospital. Prior to that, she spent seven years at UPS WorldPort as a package handler and ramp associate.
Megan was excited to join the ZNLabs crew stating, “Science has always been a passion of mine, along with animals. Being able to find the perfect balance between the two just makes my days worthwhile. I love coming in to work knowing I’m helping animals around the country.” Megan was born and raised in Louisville, Kentucky. She’s a proud owner to her fur baby Alula, her three-year-old kitty. In her spare time, she enjoys hiking, painting, exploring new places, going to the movies, trying new foods, and playing with her cat. She loves Disney, art, music, and desserts of all kinds.

Juan Pablo Svencionis, MS – Manager, Molecular and Microbiology Services

Juan Pablo was born in Canton Ohio, but was raised in Argentina, hence the accent.  He started showing interest in Biology, particularly DNA, at a young age and that made him pursue a degree in the field.  He graduated in 2011 from the University of Buenos Aires, with a Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences with an orientation in Molecular Biology and Biotechnology.  With a degree and limited options in Argentina, he decided to come back to the US to pursue a Master’s Degree in Microbiology, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from Southern Illinois University.  He was introduced to veterinary diagnostics at a large dairy farm where he developed a passion for fast and quality lab results. As soon as he learned about ZNLabs he jumped at the opportunity to join an awesome team and begin the revolution of veterinary diagnostics.  In fact, Juan is ZNLabs’ first employee and a proud shareholder 🙂

Juan is happily married to Ayelen and the proud dad of Oliver. When he gets time, he enjoys fly fishing (although it is generally less about catching fish and more about him looking sharp in a pair of waders).

Sydney Partee-Bell – ZNMaster (AKA Customer Support Specialist)

Sydney earned her Associates Degree in Business Management in 2010.  She has over five years of experience in the veterinary field working as both a client service specialist and a veterinary assistant for a couple of animal hospitals in Louisville.  After working for both human and animal doctors, Sydney found her passion was in the veterinary world (the patients were generally much happier to see her!).

Born and raised in Louisville, Kentucky, Sydney is a big University of Louisville Cardinals fan, and enjoys watching her team play both football and basketball.  She enjoys spending time with her two children, Malachai and Mykah, and two dogs, Gus the Boxer and Blue the French Bulldog.

  Jorge Laffitte – Project Manager

Jorge moved to Florida from Puerto Rico (and Florida is about as far north as he can stand, since it gets so cold in Tampa!).  He studied business and earned a Bachelor’s in Business Management.  After graduation Jorge began his career in a leadership role for the retail industry and was known for his strong team building skills, get-it-done attitude and increasing sales in five stores in the Tampa area.  Eager to continue to learn he moved over to the medical field and obtained a degree in PST/Paramedic while working in a (human) emergency room.

In his free time, Jorge loves being with his wife and four kids who keep him busy.  He also enjoys four wheeling when he needs a little break from family time 😊.  Jorge follows a simple life philosophy, to quote Paul Walker:   “The journey is more important to me now.  There’s no guarantee, no matter what.  We get one run in life”

Matt Schuman, BS, MBA, ASCP – VP, Lab Operations

Matt has more than 25 years of experience in the laboratory field serving in a variety of roles from technician to supervisor to president. He has worked in small and large hospitals and reference laboratories for both humans and our animal friends. Originally from Nebraska (and a Husker fan through and through), Matt received a bachelor’s degree in Biology from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1989 and a Medical Technology Degree from the Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha in 1993.  He earned a Master of Business Administration in 2013 from Benedictine College.  Matt began his career in an Arizona hospital and proceeded to enjoy all the adventures the desert southwest had to offer, living in both Arizona and Nevada, for almost 20 years. In 2011, Matt moved to the Kansas City area where he lives now with his wife and grown children.

And one very cute, fluffy dog named Murphy 🙂

Jeanette Abeyta-Pfaff, Implementation Specialist

Jeanette Abeyta-Pfaff has over 13 years of experience in the veterinary field, including the last three years managing ARP’s clinical lab in Salt Lake City (she currently splits her time :).  Prior to this she spent seven years with Antech Diagnostics, including running their Las Vegas lab and opening several Antech locations

A graduate of the University of Utah (B.A.) and the Utah Career College (A.S. in Veterinary Technology), Jeanette has a passion for animals that translates into a simple and friendly philosophy: “As ZNLabs grows to serve veterinarians nationwide, it’s imperative that we never forget what lies at the heart of our business – the animals for whom we provide care,” she said. “Our model is to ensure that we treat each and every sample with the same level of care we would if it came from our own pet.”

In her current role as Implementation SpecialistJeanette is responsible for ensuring a consistent standard of service and practice across all ZNLabs locations.  Jeanette currently resides in Salt Lake City with her husband, Marques, and their dachshund, Hefe.  Apart from animals, she maintains a passion for musical theater, and is an avid baseball fan.

Paul Greenman, BA – ZNware Guru (AKA, Director of IT Systems)

Paul created (actually wrote) the DVMAX practice management system in the 1990’s and grew it into an installed base of over 1000 practices.  DVMAX was acquired by Idexx Labs, Inc., in 2012 and Paul worked with Idexx for two years to integrate the software and DVMAX team into the Corporate World.  We try not to hold this against him! 😉  Paul has since worked on a range of products and projects at the intersection of veterinary medicine and computer software, supporting the clinical practice, corporate vendor, and research realms of the profession.

Paul created the first automated lab integration in DVMAX the early 1990’s and has worked on a range of integration projects ever since. He is leading the ZNLabs integration work into most common PIMS along with newer online systems.  Paul is also supporting numerous other ZNLabs projects, with a focus on software and IT-related ways to make ZNLabs better (ie, simpler, friendlier and more fair!).

Paul holds a BA in Physics from Lafayette College and lived in New York City for most of his life. Several years ago Paul moved to San Diego where he enjoys the sunny climate, hikes in the nearby hills, and time with his wife & the kids who are still home (college age and older) and a furry stable of six dogs and cats.

Adam Gersholowitz, BS (started…) – ZNintern

Adam is ZNLabs first intern.  We are still trying to figure out how he heard about ZNLabs (such a coincidence on the last name…😉).  Adam is a science and computer geek at heart, so has taken naturally to the lab environment.  He helps out wherever needed, including helping get new technology in place, plating in microbiology, accessioning, sending starter kits and scavenging around the lab for stray candy.

Adam just started his BS in Chemistry at the University of Florida.  He will start classes in Gainesville in the Spring, but is excited to continue working with ZNLabs in a remote capacity (at least until we open a lab nearby).  In his spare time, Adam loves online gaming and skating (he’s working on his moving ollie).
